Sort of worked - but not for Mac August 19, 2010 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I got this as some reviews suggested it would work for a Mac (networked). I wanted it as a backup (Time Machine) for three Macs. It seemed to work with one machine - but just had too many problems (permissions) for general use. There is online help - but it is pure PC - if you know what I mean. Also tends to go round in circles. Trying to sell it now .. and get something compatible with Mac OS (10.5 and 10.6) and Time Machine.
Difficult to Use, Impossible to Upgrade, Do Not Buy August 18, 2010 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We bought this drive for our home office network, thinking it would be useful and quick network storage. NOT. It makes a lot of noise, annoyingly resets its clock to the future without asking. Worst of all the terrible iomega website. Just tried to upgrade the firmware, but it isn't an .exe file and we can't make heads or tails of it.
Often, when we reboot the network, our systems fail to recognize the drive and the only known cure is to reboot the entire network.
A terrible, horrible, bad, ugly, nasty useless product. We should have returned it in the 30 day window to Amazon, but we decided to 'give it a try.' Mistake.
Print server feature doesn't work August 12, 2010 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This device works fairly well as a network drive. It's fairly fast when reading, pretty slow when writing, and crashes a little more often than I wish. But pretty well, especially for the price.
But if you are buying it for the print server feature, then forget it. It doesn't work at all with my mainstream Canon printer. It configures as documented, but when you try to use it to print a document, an icon briefly appears and indicates that it is sending the data to the printer, but absolutely nothing happens after that. I spent considerable time with their support person and all he could tell me is that it only works with "some printers". I asked which ones, and he said he doesn't know?!?!
DO NOT BUY FOR MAC August 12, 2010 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I read a bunch of reviews that raved about this product. The features sounded fantastic - setting up remote access networks, access to all your files anywhere... etc - for $130ish?! - almost too good to be true! Most of the bad reviews seemed to be people who didn't know what they were doing, or people who had a bad experience (blackout, other hardware failure). Needless to say, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT if you use OSX.
Mine came in the mail yesterday. I spent 5 - 6 hours trying to set it up, but it wouldn't mount. Time Machine wouldn't recognize it, disk utility wouldn't recognize it, synk wouldn't recognize it, and their own software that they give you for backups wouldn't be able to use it either.
Apparently, the problem is that OSX cannot create this .sparsebundle file on the network drive, which then prevents your computer from accessing the drive. The technician on the phone (free) actually sent me a .pdf that was very useful, that gave me directions to create a .sparsebundle file on my computer, which I could then copy to the network drive. Luckily, I'm decent with computers, but it was a lengthy process, involving the terminal function, etc. I'm not sure if I'll have to repeat this often, or if I'll be able to use the other space on the drive.
Once this was fixed, it appears to be using Time Machine to back up my computer. This is good. I do not know if I'll be able to back up my wife's computer, or if I'll be able to do anything else with this product other than use it as a backup.
The interface for network configurations is extremely confusing, especially for seasoned mac users. There are multitudes of settings, and its not clear what each does. It is not nearly as easy as using a Cisco router, or anything that Apple makes. So, I guess its cheaper than buying an Apple Time Capsule, if all you need is wireless backup, and don't mind the hassle.
The other problem is that if you're expecting a normal hard drive, this is not it. You have to work through folders, set up by iomega software, that mount as network folders. You cannot partition the drive, you cannot set users and permissions, like you can in OSX. If you're worried about security, I'm not sure that you can ever zero out the drive when you're done, and i'm not sure if you can do encryption.
Its possible that over time I'll be happier with this thing, as I learn how to use it, but right now I wish I spent the extra money for a Time Capsule, or shopped around for a drive that would be easier to use.
What a great NAS for the price. August 11, 2010 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was in the market to purchase a cheap Network storage. I found it. So far this device is delivering exactly what I needed. It works great with my PS3. I installed Iomega's QuickProtect, which works great on Windows 7, and love the ease of use. Speed is not bad for a home NAS. I am very happy with this unit and would recommend it if your looking a cheap way to backup stuff on the network and use it with DLNA and iTunes.
