5 out of 5 stars More Expensive But May Be Worth It For Many   September 5, 2010
Previously, when I've bought USB enclosures for 2.5" hard drives, it has been for the express purpose of salvaging data from the hard drive of an otherwise dead notebook computer. Since I've had no long-term plans for such enclosures, I've always bought the cheapest ones I could find.

In my most recent application, I decided to spring for something better-made. This enclosure fits the bill perfectly. I was upgrading the nearly-full 120GB Toshiba drive in my Dell Inspiron notebook computer to a 500GB Western Digital drive and needed an enclosure that could recognize such high capacity. This enclosure worked perfectly.

It appears, from reading previous reviews, that the manufacturer has updated its installation manual, but anyone who has computer experience and any mechanical ability at all should be able to figure out how to install an SATA hard drive in the enclosure without reading the instructions.

Removing two tiny screws from the end of the enclosure releases the innards, which slide out of the sturdy extruded aluminum enclosure like a drawer. The drive then easily snaps into the socket that is mounted on the circuit board. Then the drive is secured to the circuit board with four small screws that are supplied. Sliding the board back into the aluminum enclosure the same way it came out, and re-installing the two tiny screws that holds the end plate in place, is all that is needed to complete the installation.

My computer quickly recognized the full capacity of my new 500GB drive when I connected the enclosure with the USB connecting cable supplied. I then used Acronis True Image Home software to clone all of the data on my notebook computer's internal drive to the one in the enclosure. Once the cloning operation was complete, I removed the new 500GB drive from the enclosure and installed it in my notebook computer. My computer booted flawlessly from the cloned drive confirming that the enclosure had worked properly. Then I put the 120GB hard drive, that had been in my notebook computer, into the enclosure, formatted it and now have an external drive that I can use to backup files.

This enclosure is obviously better made and is somewhat larger than other enclosures that I have used. Most of the cheap enclosures I've used have no provision for securing the hard drive, so they just rattle around inside. This enclosure is solidly made, well-designed and offers more protection for the internal hard drive. For applications that involve long-term use and the ability to recognize a high-capacity 2.5" drive, I believe that this enclosure represents a good value.

5 out of 5 stars simple and stylish portable SATA carrier   September 1, 2010
Buying this saved me from needing to purchase another SATA drive for data storage. My laptop's motherboard fried making the two SATA drives in it just a pair of bricks for a while until I got two of these cases. At first I couldn't plug the drives into the case then I realized the drives had adapters installed for the laptop motherboard interface. Installation was rather simple after that. The drive case is simple - just undo two screws, slide it apart, slip in the SATA drive and put it back together. The drive comes with a USB cable so you can just plug n' play any established drive. I now use my two old drives for video and music storage. Stylish colors to choose from is a plus, simple and compact makes it easy to carry on the go. A good purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Great enclosure, Fast e-Sata speeds   August 30, 2010
After reading the reviews I finally decided to get the e-Sata version of the HDD enclosure as my office laptop has an e-Sata port. The speeds are great. The warning given by other reviewers on how to remove the screws helped me a lot. The manual is messed up backwards. DON'T read the manual. I bought $4 e-Sata cable from Amazon. I guess they should have included the cable itself and saved the hassle of buying extra one.

But no worries. This is a really good enclosure and keeps the HDD secured in it.

1 out of 5 stars eSATA doesn't work properly   August 17, 2010

It simply doesn't work with eSATA interface. When I've connected it to my Windows 7 computer and tried access disk it starts hang the system every 7-10 seconds for 3-5 seconds. Process Info shows that driver generates a lot of interrupts and DPCs. Another eSATA drive connected to the computer works fine, so the problem, probably, in eSATA implementation in this product.
USB 2.0 interface works OK except sometimes hangs (for a few second) the computer too.
Disappointed, will return it back...
